Flood Awareness Week

Texas Flood Awareness Week 2026 is observed from May 18 to May 22, emphasizing flood safety, preparedness, and community awareness across the state.

Texas Flood Awareness Week is a statewide observance established by the Texas Floodplain Management Association (TFMA) to promote flood safety in homes, schools, workplaces, and communities. The week commemorates the devastating 2015 Memorial Day floods in Central Texas and reflects on more recent events, such as the 2025 Hill Country Floods, highlighting the ongoing importance of preparedness and public awareness. The observance encourages Texans to take proactive steps to reduce flood risks and protect lives and property. 

Emergency Planning: Pack an emergency supply kit, create a family emergency plan, and identify safe evacuation routes. 

Flood Insurance: Standard homeowner or renter insurance does not cover flood damage. Residents should consider National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) coverage, noting a 30-day waiting period for new policies. 

During Floods: Never attempt to cross moving water; as little as six inches can sweep a person off their feet, and two feet can carry away vehicles. Public safety campaigns like “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” reinforce this critical message.

Legislative and Community Support

Following the 2025 Hill Country floods, Texas strengthened flood preparedness through legislation, including House Bill 3, which allocated nearly $3 million from the Economic Stabilization Fund for disaster relief, preparedness, and training initiatives. This includes $50 million for local grants to purchase flood warning equipment and $28 million to improve weather forecasting. These measures aim to enhance community resilience and reduce the impact of future floods.
